PATTERN THEFT ALERT

It has been brought to our attention that a vendor at the Calgary Expo last weekend was selling Fandom In Stitches patterns.

These pilfered patterns had identifying marks removed that would have indicated they were free patterns from our website and our designers.

Fortunately for us, members of our quilting community are everywhere. A diligent fan reported the theft to the expo and we are currently following up on that report.

We'd like to give a Big Thanks to the Calgary Expo for looking into this issue.

Just a reminder, because it sadly seems to be needed:

Fandom in Stitches DOES NOT SELL PATTERNS and we DO NOT allow our patterns to be sold

NOT NOW.

NOT EVER.

At the top of every Fandom In Stitches page you will see:

All patterns on this site are derivative art, free for your personal & non-profit use ONLY.

Patterns not to be used for distribution, resale or manufacture.

If you come across a person, vendor or website selling Fandom In Stitches patterns, please report it. We have had more than one occasion to have a website shut down that was selling our patterns and we will not hesitate to pursue reports of theft.

We are a community committed to sharing awesome quilts and not to squeezing money out of fellow fans.

If you are reading this and you are the person that committed this act of theft against our generous Designers and our quilting community: Don't be a jerk. These patterns are free for all of fandom. They are not for you to steal and sell for profit.

To the rest of our community: Thank you for your support and your Constant Vigilance.

PSA: Not For Sale

It has come to our attention that a seller on Etsy is offering Harry Potter quilts for sale using patterns, primarily The Project of Doom, from fandominstitches.com and sewhooked.com.

Please note: SALE OF ITEMS MADE FROM THE PATTERNS PROVIDED ON THIS WEBSITE IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.

Our patterns are free as derivative art under Fair Use.

It is posted all over FiS, and on the patterns themselves, that patterns are NOT TO BE USED FOR PROFIT OR RESALE.

We have previously consulted a lawyer about the legal validity of being able to share patterns created based on the fandoms we love. It is our understanding that under current law, we can share our patterns with you as long as they are not resold or product created to profit from. The moment that happens, we open ourselves up to cease & desist letters, lawsuits and the possibility of losing Fandom In Stitches and everything our volunteers have put into it.

I'm sure we don't need to explain that there is ZERO we could do if someone tried to shut us down. All it would take is one person to ruin what we have built here.

We ask again, PLEASE do not sell items made from patterns posted on FiS.

If you cannot respect this request, we ask that you not use our patterns out of respect to the Designers, our quilting community and to the fandoms we love.

CONSTANT VIGILANCE.

Fraud in the Fandom

It has come to our attention that there is a person or persons taking Fandom In Stitches patterns and redrawing* them almost line for line, posting them online and then claiming the patterns as original designs with no credit to FiS or the original designer(s), their websites or blogs.

Besides this being incredibly uncool, it is also fraudulent behavior.

Almost all FiS patterns are Copyright or Creative Commons, per each Designer's policy.

Fandom In Stitches wholeheartedly supports independent fandom designers, and we would, in fact, not exist without them. Our Designers spend hours, days and sometimes weeks tweaking and perfecting their designs before sharing them with the FiS community, all for free.

Fandom In Stitches only posts patterns with Designer permission and we do not now, nor will we ever post patterns based on an existing designed without the express permission of the original designer.

Designers, if your work has been reposted without permission, then I have already contacted you. If you suspect that your work has been fraudulently copied and reposted, please contact FiS Admin as soon as possible.

Thank you to those diligent Fandom In Stitches readers that let us know of this unfortunate happening. We have no intention of acknowledging the person or persons responsible here on FiS. We have no desire to create more of a stir, but we do want our fans to be aware of the situation.

For more about Fandom In StitchesDesigners and to visit their blogs and websites, visit the Designer page.

If you have concerns about the content of this post, please contact us.
