In this post we have the layout and the invitational blocks below. And the announcement of our winner for the invitational.

 The colors for the quilt layout is Cranberry, Blue and Gold. These are the colors for Ilvermorny, the North American wizarding school. Even though the school has 4 houses, all the students wear the same colors. Please feel free to use your own color choices.

Jennifer Rowles have made an example of the quilt top for me. Instead of the starred sashing she put a star in the yellow corner pieces. I really think it turned out pretty awesome.

The one thing I need to mention, is that I originally planned to make only 10 x 10" blocks. So how do you add in the 10 x 20" blocks?
First you need to add 2" background fabric to your 10 x 20" block on either end. Or 1.5" background to both ends of the block to make it fit into the space of 2 other blocks. The background fabric is filling in the space that would have been sashing in between to of the blocks.  I will show how to do this in the full layout instruction that you will be downloading.

If you've participated in events like this with us before, then you know about  the signature blocks! I'd like to invite everyone participating in the 2016 Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along to share a block for a special 2016 Signature Quilt. This quilt is my way of remembering everyone that quilted along in 2016.

You can send your signature block at any time, you do not need to finish the whole quilt first.

Hand or machine embroidery, printed fabric, fabric pen, marker, or stenciled with fabric paint/pen, etc. are all acceptable. Please, no iron-on or transfers.

You can use any scraps from your bins for this block.

Block 56

Erumpent - Level 4

10 x 20 inch paper pieced pattern excluding seam allowance

The Erumpent is a large grey African beast of great power. Weighing up to a tonne, the Erumpent may be mistaken for a rhinoceros at a distance. It has a thick hide that repels most charms and curses, a large, sharp horn upon its nose and a long, rope-like tail. Erumpents give birth to only one calf at a time.

The Erumpent will not attack unless sorely provoked, but should it charge, the results are usually catastrophic. The Erumpent’s horn can pierce everything from skin to metal, and contains a deadly fluid which will cause whatever is injected with it to explode. Erumpent numbers are not great, as males frequently explode each other during the mating season. They are treated with great caution by African wizards. Erumpent horns, tails, and the Exploding Fluid are all used in potions, though classified as Class B Tradeable Materials (Dangerous and Subject to Strict Control).

Imp - Level 2

The imp is found only in Britain and Ireland. It is sometimes confused with the pixie. They are of similar height (between six and eight inches), though the imp cannot fly as the pixie can, nor is it as vividly colored (the imp is usually dark brown to black). It does, however, have a similar slapstick sense of humor. Its preferred terrain is damp and marshy, and it is often found near river banks, where it will amuse itself by pushing and tripping the unwary. Imps eat small insects and have breeding habits much like the fairies, though imps do not spin cocoons; the young are hatched fully formed at around one inch in length.

Block 58

Swooping Evil - Level ??

The Swooping Evil is a blue-and-green winged magical creature It looks like a cross between a reptile and an extremely large butterfly. When it is not flying with its spiked wings, the Swooping Evil shrinks into a green spiny cocoon. It can be quite dangerous, as it can feed on people's brains, but also demonstrated being able to deflect at least some spells by flying into their path. It secretes venom that, when properly diluted, can be used to erase bad memories.

Block 59

Nundu - Level 5

This East African beast is arguably the most dangerous in the world. A gigantic leopard that moves silently despite its size and whose breath causes disease virulent enough to eliminate entire villages, it has never yet been subdued by fewer than a hundred skilled wizards working together.

Block 60

Chinese Fireball Dragon - Level 5

(sometimes known as Liondragon)

The only Oriental dragon has a particularly striking appearance. Scarlet and smooth-scaled, it has a fringe of golden spikes around its snub-snouted face and extremely protuberant eyes. The Fireball gained its name for the mushroom-shaped flame that bursts from its nostrils when it is angered. It weighs between two and four tonnes, the female being larger than the male. Eggs are a vivid crimson speckled with gold, and the shells are much prized for use in Chinese wizardry. The Fireball is aggressive but more tolerant of its own species than most dragons, sometimes consenting to share its territory with up to two others. The Fireball will feast on most mammals, though it prefers pigs and humans.

Thunderbird - Level ??

 The Thunderbird is a large, avian creature native to the arid Arizona climate in the United States. It is closely related to the phoenix. An Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry house was named after this creature. It can create storms as it flies, and can sense danger. The famous American wand-maker Shikoba Wolfe used Thunderbird tail feather as a wand core in the early 20th century. After rescuing a Thunderbird from traffickers in Egypt, Newton Scamander named him Frank, and promised to return him to his natural habitat in Arizona.

It is your choice where you want your stars to show up. Example below.

The layout at the end of the quilt along, allows for the stars to be on any side of each beast. 

Or just leave the stars out, it is absolutely your choice.

General information!

All beasts are rated from 1* to 5***** in danger levels. 
Reminder! You do not have to make all the patterns, choose which ones you like.
With every beast pattern, the danger level will be shown. If you choose to do the paper pieced star sashing, you can find the pattern below the beasts patterns.
The pattern pieces is not colored in, they have been left blank so that you can choose your own colors. A color chart has been provided for a reference.

All patterns will also be added to the Fantastic Beasts archive here on Fandom In Stitches.

Before we get started there are some important things you need to know.

About the Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along:

•  Want to have lots of friends to talk to while you stitch? Join the Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along Facebook Group.  

• Join the QAL at anytime and work at your own pace. There is no penalty for starting late.

•  Need some help, visit sewhooked.com for paper piecing help. 

• All Fantastic Beasts patterns are 100% free and they will stay that way. These patterns are free for your personal and NON-profit use only. Not to be used for manufacture or distribution. Sale of this pattern or quilts made from this pattern is prohibited. 

•  The Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along will be presenting five quilt blocks a week on each Wednesday for 12 weeks.  

• The blocks will range from easy to hard, you will have lots of blocks to choose from. Most of the patterns will be paper pieced patterns and some of the patterns will be applique. There will be 60+ patterns to choose from. 

•  An optional stars sashing pattern will be posted every week. You will need 1 to 5 stars per sashing. (More info below in the fabric amounts and pattern link)  

• The layout (3 sizes) will be released on week 13. Some fabric amounts are available below. Possible bonus blocks might be added with the layouts, in the last week. 

•  All Fantastic Beasts QAL activities, prizes, etc. will be posted on fandominstitches.com.

• For best results print with NO SCALING. In Google Drive (where this file is hosted) uncheck “fit to page.” See your printer instructions for more details if needed.

• 24 Fantastic Beasts Blocks pieced and squared up to 10 1/2” x 10 1/2”
• 4 yards background fabric
• assorted scraps from your bins for beasts
• ½ yard of gold/yellow fabric + optional ¼ yard gold / yellow fabric for Stars
• 3 ½ yard cranberry/red fabric + optional ¼ yard cranberry / red fabric for background of Stars
• 1 yard blue fabric
