| Flobberworm - Level 1 |
10 x 10" Applique pattern excluding seam allowance

The Flobberworm lives in damp ditches. A thick brown worm reaching up to ten inches in length, the Flobberworm moves very little. One end is indistinguishable from the other, both producing the mucus from which its name is derived and which is sometimes used to thicken potions. The Flobberworm’s preferred food is lettuce, though it will eat almost any vegetation.

| Jobberknoll - Danger Level 2 |

Block 8
The Jobberknoll (northern Europe and America) is a tiny blue, speckled bird which eats small insects. It makes no sound until the moment of its death, at which point it lets out a long scream made up of every sound it has ever heard, regurgitated backwards. Jobberknoll feathers are used in Truth Serums and Memory Potions.

| Crup - Danger Level 3 |

Block 9
The Crup originated in the southeast of England. It closely resembles a Jack Russell terrier, except for the forked tail. The Crup is almost certainly a wizard-created dog, as it is intensely loyal to wizards and ferocious towards Muggles. It is a great scavenger, eating anything from gnomes to old tyres. Crup licenses may be obtained from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures on completion of a simple test to prove that the applicant wizard is capable of controlling the Crup in Muggle-inhabited areas. Crup owners are legally obliged to remove the Crup’s tail with a painless Severing Charm while the Crup is six to eight weeks old, lest Muggles notice it.

| Golden Snidget - Danger Level 4 |

Block 10
The Golden Snidget is an extremely rare, protected species of bird. Completely round, with a very long, thin beak and glistening, jewel-like red eyes, the Golden Snidget is an extremely fast flier that can change direction with uncanny speed and skill, owing to the rotational joints of its wings.
The Golden Snidget’s feathers and eyes are so highly prized that it was at one time in danger of being hunted to extinction by wizards. The danger was recognized in time and the species protected, the most notable factor being the substitution of the Golden Snitch for the Snidget in the game of Quidditch. Snidget sanctuaries exist worldwide.

| Quintaped - Danger Level 5 |

The Quintaped is a highly dangerous carnivorous beast with a particular taste for humans. Its low-slung body is covered with thick reddish-brown hair, as are its five legs, each of which ends in a clubfoot. The Quintaped is found only upon the Isle of Drear off the northernmost tip of Scotland. Drear has been made unplottable for this reason. Legend has it that the Isle of Drear was once populated by two wizarding families, the McCliverts and the MacBoons. A drunken wizarding duel between Dugald, chief of the clan McClivert, and Quintius, head of the clan MacBoon, is supposed to have led to the death of Dugald. In retaliation, so the story has it, a gang of McCliverts surrounded the MacBoon dwellings one night and Transfigured each and every MacBoon into a monstrous five-legged creature. The McCliverts realised too late that the Transfigured MacBoons were infinitely more dangerous in this state (the MacBoons had the reputation for great ineptitude at magic). Moreover, the MacBoons resisted every attempt to turn them back into human form. The monsters killed every last one of the McCliverts until no human remained on the island. It was only then that the MacBoon monsters realized that in the absence of anyone to wield a wand, they would be forced to remain as they were forevermore. Whether this tale is true or not will never be known. Certainly there are no surviving McCliverts or MacBoons to tell us what happened to their ancestors. The Quintapeds cannot talk and have strenuously resisted every attempt by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures to capture a specimen and try to untransfigure it, so we must assume that if they are indeed, as their nickname suggests, Hairy MacBoons, they are quite happy to live out their days as beasts.

The layout at the end of the quilt along, allows for the stars to be on any side of each beast.
Or just leave the stars out, it is absolutely your choice.
Signature Block Pattern.
If
you've participated in events like this with us before, then you know
about the signature blocks! I'd like to invite everyone participating
in the 2016 Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along to share a block for a special
2016 Signature Quilt. This quilt is my way of remembering everyone that
quilted along in 2016.
You can send your signature block at any time, you do not need to finish the whole quilt first.

Hand or machine embroidery, printed fabric, fabric pen, marker, or stenciled with fabric paint/pen, etc. are all acceptable. Please, no iron-ons or transfers.
You can use any scraps from your bins for this block.

General information!

Before we get started there are some important things you need to know.
About the Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along:
- All patterns are designed by Vanda Chittenden (Quilt In Piece)
- Do you have a question? Please contact me via email above or contact me in the Facebook group below.
- Want to have lots of friends to talk to while you stitch? Join the Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along Facebook Group.
- Join the QAL at anytime and work at your own pace. There is no penalty for starting late.
- Need some help, visit sewhooked.com for paper piecing help.
- All Fantastic Beasts patterns are 100% free and they will stay that way. These patterns are free for your personal and NON-profit use only. Not to be used for manufacture or distribution. Sale of this pattern or quilts made from this pattern is prohibited.
- The Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along will be presenting five quilt blocks a week on each Wednesday for 12 weeks.
- The blocks will range from easy to hard, you will have lots of blocks to choose from. Most of the patterns will be paper pieced patterns and some of the patterns will be applique. There will be 60+ patterns to choose from.
- An optional stars sashing pattern will be posted every week. You will need 1 to 5 stars per sashing. (More info below in the fabric amounts and pattern link)
- The layout (3 sizes) will be released on week 13. Some fabric amounts are available below. Possible bonus blocks might be added with the layouts, in the last week.
- All Fantastic Beasts QAL activities, prizes, etc. will be posted on fandominstitches.com.
- The colors for the quilt layout are Cranberry, Blue and Gold. These are the colors for Ilvermorny North American wizarding school. Even though the school has 4 houses, all the students wore the same colors. Please feel free to use your own color choices.
- All blocks will be sewn during the Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along on fandominstitches.com. And will be 10 x 10” excluding seam allowance. The Star Sashing will be 2 x 10" excluding seam allowance.
- For best results print with NO SCALING. In Google Drive (where this file is hosted) uncheck “fit to page.” See your printer instructions for more details if needed.

Fabric Requirements for the crib size (all fabric amounts are approximate)
- 9 Fantastic Beasts Blocks pieced and squared up to 10 1/2” x 10 1/2”
- 1 ½ yards background fabric
- assorted scraps from your bins for beasts
- ½ yard of gold/yellow fabric + optional ¼ yard gold / yellow fabric for Stars
- 2 yard cranberry/red fabric + optional ¼ yard cranberry / red fabric for background of Stars
- ½ yard blue fabric
Fabric Requirements for the Twin size (all fabric amounts are approximate)
- 24 Fantastic Beasts Blocks pieced and squared up to 10 1/2” x 10 1/2”
- 4 yards background fabric
- assorted scraps from your bins for beasts
- ½ yard of gold/yellow fabric + optional ¼ yard gold / yellow fabric for Stars
- 3 ½ yard cranberry/red fabric + optional ¼ yard cranberry / red fabric for background of Stars
- 1 yard blue fabric
