Stories from the Fandom in Stitches Community: Dana J

Hello fellow quilters!  I was a children’s librarian and elementary school librarian for 17 years and then I moved into elementary classrooms.  I had been a quilter for more than 20 years when I discovered the FIS website.  Somehow, I had MISSED the first Bookshelf quilt along!  I was so excited to participate in 2016.  I did get all my blocks made in a timely fashion, but then I sent them off to a friend with an embroidery machine to add titles for me.

In the meantime, I made full sized one for a young friend getting married (she had been a student at the elementary school where I read Harry Potter books aloud before there was a movie!) and then I made two baby ones for other friends who loved Harry Potter as much as I did.

I learned of the show in Houston to honor the Harry Potter inspired quilts and I worked so hard to get my personal one finished and an entry submitted.  That was in 2020 and while my quilt was accepted (Yay me!) the show was canceled.

Even though I have made many other quilts since then, I will consider that project to be my personal best.  I loved reliving scenes from the books and movies, considering fabrics, sharing my blocks in the online group and sharing fabrics with quilters issuing and SOS for some prints. I had a special collaboration with my long armer (Candy Carpenter) as she was not even a HP fan and had no idea of the treasure the was creating for me.

Thank you to all who shared their talents in the form of patterns so that others could learn skills and make tangible memories with fabric, thread and sewing machines.

Sincerely,
Dana Johnson
