Welcome to Week 1 of A Hocus Pocus Quilt Along!
Between now and the end of December, we'll be making the quilt you see below, designed by Daphne Seymour, with help from Jo Minvielle, and the wonderful Fandom in Stitches pattern testers!
We are VERY excited to share this extra special quilt along with you!
Before we begin, a little About this EVENT:
- A Hocus Pocus Quilt Along (#hocuspocusqal) was designed by Daphne Seymour with help from Jo Minvielle. It is hosted on Fandom in Stitches by Jennifer Ofenstein of sewhooked.com & fandominstitches.com.
- Pattern testers for this event include: Daphne Seymour, Jo Minvielle, Missy McKenna, & Lydia Goode
- The event is September - December 2018.
- This event includes free patterns as well as piecing instructions for the quilt top.
- All patterns are paper pieced, a couple have optional embroidery.
- Find a pattern overwhelming? Feel free to substitute a solid piece of fabric or another block of your choice.
- The pattern sizes for each block corresponds with the layout shown (assembly to be included at the end).
- Sizes are listed as finished (without seam allowance) and unfinished (with seam allowance added).
- Patterns are rated 1 out of 5 by difficulty (1 being the simplest, 5 being the most complex)
- Use fabric colors that work best for you. See fabric amounts below.
- The finished quilt is 58" x 58"
- Patterns are archived in Holiday Favorites - Halloween.
- Want to design a pattern for this quilt? Please save it for the Design Invitational, coming in December!
5" (5 1/2" unfinished)
5" (5 1/2" unfinished) paper pieced
Background Blocks
At this time, we recommend that you cut the 4 background squares you'll need for the final layout and keep them with your other blocks.
This will ensure that you have these pieces set aside and ready to go into your quilt top at the end of the event.
Background Fabric
4 - 5 1/2"x 5 1/2"
Want to make your quilt a different size?
Enlarge each week's pattern by the same percentage to get a larger (or smaller!) quilt!

Is anyone else having trouble printing the patterns out? I am wondering if its on my end or not.
ReplyDeleteClick on the picture of the block and it will open up the paper piecing pages (3). Then go to the next block piocture, click, it opens and prints. I would also download it to your computer in case you need to reprint. HTH
DeleteI did a shut down, walked away for a bit and was now able to print it correctly. Yay!!! Thanks so much for the patterns!
ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble. The pattern won't center on the page and is cut off on the right side.
ReplyDeleteHi, Ava. Have you tried downloading and then printing the pattern? That has helped several other people with a similar problem. If that doesn't help, please email me, ofenjen@fandominstitches.com.
DeleteGoing to make this for my daughter. Is there a way to get the instructions in PDF form too? Thanks, can't do this now, but will definitely be downloading and making the quilt for next Halloween. :) This is awesome! I also snooped around and found MY absolute favorite...LOTR pattern's!!! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteHi, Barabara. When you click on the pattern link, look for the down arrow in the top right hand corner. That will allow you to download the pdf file. Happy stitching! ~Jennifer
DeleteHi to everyone.
ReplyDeleteI just found this qal and am hoping to be able to join.
