Iron Man is from the Marvel Universe and was created by Stan Lee.  He first appeared in 1963.  His true identity is playboy billionaire Tony Stark who created the suit to save his life (after suffering a sever chest injury) and escape his captors. 

He is a founding member of the Avengers
