Dragons Dragons Dragons
Dragons were considered to have been extinct until Daenerys Targaryen hatched 3 dragon eggs which were thought to have been to stone. She named her dragons - Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion, after her husband Drogo, her brother Rhaegar and her brother Viserys. Drogon is the largest and most aggressive. His scales are black, his horns, spinal plates and eyes are blood red. His flame is black with shots of red. Rhaegal has green and bronze scales, his teeth and claws are black and his eyes are bronze. His flame is orange and yellow with shots of green. Viserion has cream scales with gold horns, wing bones and spinel plates. His teeth are black daggers and his eyes gold. His flame is pale gold with streaks of red and orange.
Dragons origins are unclear. The Valyrians mastered the art of raising them and used them as weapons. After the Doom only 5 dragons belonging to the Targaryens survived. Aenar Targaryen had fled into exile before the Doom. Balerion survived the longest and was alone until Vhagar and Meraxes were hatched.
Aegon Targaryen (Aegon the Conqueror) and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya used Balerion (Aegon), Vhagar (Visenya) and Meraxes (Rhaenys) to conquer the seven kingdoms (2BC - 1AC).
Many dragons were hatched after this. By the start of the Targaryen civil war in 129AC there were 20 living dragons including 3 wild ones on Dragonstone (Sheepstealer, The Cannibal and Grey Ghost). Vhagar was the oldest and largest dragon living at the time. Meraxes had died (in battle) in 10AC and Balerion (of old age) in 94AC.
The Civil War called the Dance of the Dragons lasted until 131AC and saw the death of most of the remaining dragons. Five (Shrykos, Morghul, Tyraxes, Dreamfyre and Syrax)
died in one day when an angry mob stormed the Dragon Pit in Kings Landing. Following the war only 4 remained - Sheepsteeler, The Cannibal, Silver wing and Morning. Vhagar had died fighting fellow dragon Caraxes over Harrenhal in 130AC. This was the beginning of the end for dragons. The last dragon sick, stunted and misshapen died in 153AC.
Nineteen Dragon skulls were kept on display in the throne room of the Red-Keep by the Targaryens until Roberts Rebellion in 282AC. These included Meraxes, Vhagar and Balerion. Robert put them into storage after he took power.
