Maesters are scholars and healers that train at a school called the Citadel.
The Citadel is a structure in Oldtown in Kings Landing and is considered home to all maesters. They complete all their training there. At the entrance of the Citadel are 2 green marble sphinxes.
Males may begin training at any age, females are not permitted to study or join the order.
After finishing his studies, a maester is assigned to a castle, keep or other holding, and is loyal to the people of that place as a mentor, healer and adviser, regardless of changes in control of that holding. A maester who earns his chain is known only by his title and first name.
The Grand Maester is the most senior member of the order and serves as its representative to the king. His chain indicates his office and does not reflect his studies.
Archmaesters are the masters of their particular area of study. They receive a mask, ring, and rod in the metal that corresponds to the area of study.
The Seneschal is chosen from among the archmaesters by lot. A new one is chosen each year. The Seneschal is tasked with the governance of the Citadel.
A maester studies in different fields. For each field they become proficient in they receive a link for their chain. These links are formed from every metal known to man, but almost no maester will ever wear them all. Maesters do not remove the chain ever, not even when sleeping.
These metals are - Black Iron, Brass, Bronze,Copper, Electrum, Yellow Gold, Iron, Lead, Pale Steel, Pewter, Platinum, Red Gold, Silver, Steel, Tin and Valyrian Steel.
