It is with GREAT EXCITEMENT that we announced The Project of Doom 2015 Quilt Along!
This award winning (no joke!) paper pieced Harry Potter Bookcase Quilt is by far our most popular project here on Fandom In Stitches. We've had repeated requests to bring it back as a community-wide project...So, we are!
This award winning (no joke!) paper pieced Harry Potter Bookcase Quilt is by far our most popular project here on Fandom In Stitches. We've had repeated requests to bring it back as a community-wide project...So, we are!
To make this BIG project more doable, we'll be making one block a week starting on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, and more importantly, we'll be doing it TOGETHER.
Whether this is your first Project of Doom or your fifth, we encourage you to stitch along with us.
Never finished your original Project of Doom? Use this Quilt Along as an excuse to get it out and get stitching again!
Want to make blocks, but don't need a whole quilt? We'll be collecting blocks all year long to make fun charity quilts for The Linus Connection, which provides quilts for kids in crisis Central Texas!
Fabric: You will need the same background fabric throughout the entire quilt, and I recommend something neutral, a tone on tone beige, gray, or similar, anything that will make the block designs stand out. You'll need approximately 3 yards of background fabric. That leaves a lot of wiggle room for mistakes and for your own style of paper piecing. All other fabrics for the actual blocks will be small amounts. You can work from scraps or start collecting fun, magical fat quarters, batiks, etc. This quilt uses approximately 1 yard of sashing fabric and 1 yard of border fabric, but I recommend waiting on that until you see how your blocks turn out to decide what you want.
I'm so excited to try and join this year! I discovered the project after it had already been completed, and I have never gotten around to actually starting it. Guess this is the perfect excuse, yay! =)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad you're excited! That's exactly the reason we're doing it again. :D
DeleteI am tempted, so tempted...sounds like a good chance to get out the novels and have another read, as well :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Reading and sewing...my two favorite things!
DeleteI'm so excited to start this project! I'm so in!
ReplyDeleteYay, glad to hear that!
DeleteYes, count me in!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear it, Vicki!
DeleteOh yeah! I always thought that one was so cool!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It really is a fun quilt to make. :D
DeleteI am in! And I'm very excited!! I found Fandom in Stitches after this project was over. I downloaded all of the patterns but have not made the quilt. I can't wait to get started!!!
ReplyDeleteYay! It's for people like you that we're doing it again. :D
DeleteI'm in! To finish my original PoD!
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic, Amy! 2015 will be your year to finish. :D
DeleteYes I'm in I found Fandom in Stiches after the project was done I collected all the patterns and I even bought a bunch of fabric I thought would be great but never started. This will really get me going.
ReplyDeleteYou sound totally ready to go, awesome!
DeleteI've been dying to make this but have never paper peiced... Would you consider making a video for the first block? I really want to join in!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a possibility. :) In the meantime, I have a full class online that I taught a few years ago that might help you out. It's free. http://www.fandominstitches.com/2014/02/paper-piecing-art-learn-with-jennifer.html
DeleteI am in 100%
ReplyDeleteAfter doing the Harry Potter castle quilt I will be ready for this one!! I have a friend that wants a PoD quilt.
ReplyDeleteThat's great, Emily, we'll be glad to have you playing along with us!
DeleteYay! I'm in! :-) First timer here. :-D
ReplyDeleteFantastic, welcome!
DeleteYay! I've never done a project like this before and am very excited!
ReplyDeleteKaren
We're excited to, too, and glad to have you!
DeleteI'm in too! I need to work on my paper piecing :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great way to perfect it!
DeleteJust found out about this quilt this past September at a quilt show. Been finishing up other projects. January will be perfect timing! So excited!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm thrilled to hear how you found us! Welcome. :)
DeleteI love this quilt and have wanted to make it for a long time! Maybe this will be the year. Does anyone have a source for the jellybean fabric?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely join us...and I'm working on the jelly bean fabric. More on that later!
DeleteWill the blocks be released in the same weekly order as the first PoD QAL? I'm trying to make a strategy for fabric acquisition since my stash is kind of low at the moment. Thanks!
DeleteDon't know that I can face it again - the first one was such a labour of love with all that hand embroidery. I loved every minute but......
ReplyDeleteI have been dieing to make this quilt, and I think I finally figured out who to make it for. My nephew is a die hard Harry Potter fan, and though he has nine and ten year old boys and is a quilter himself, he doesn't like paper piecing. Gasp!! Horrible!!! No problem, I can make it for him. cdahlgren at live dot com
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try!!
ReplyDeleteYay! I am so there!! Don't know if I can wait until January, though
ReplyDeleteI've been needing to get back to my HP: PoD quilt blocks. This should be just what I need. I didn't know how to paper piece, and didn't even know about the PoD quilt when ya'll did it last time. What fun! Count me in!
ReplyDeleteI'm in! So excited! My son is currently in love with all things Potter.
ReplyDeleteI hope I can keep up. I still have the last one to finish, too.
ReplyDeleteCount me in!
ReplyDeleteCool! Added to my social sewing calendar http://swoodsonsays.com/sew-a-long-calendar/
ReplyDeleteI am going to try and do this if at all possible. The first time I saw this quilt I was spellbound, (pun intended), I could not believe something like that was even possible with fabric. I had not even heard of paper piecing at the time. My whole family has always been huge Harry Potter fans, we even have a Harry Potter room painted like a castle, with all the knick- knacks and collectible toys set up in it. It looks like a daunting project for someone like me, who is a medium skill level paper piecer, but I know that I will more likely complete it in a group setting as that is very motivating. Thank you for all of the amazing patterns!
ReplyDeleteI believe I will be ready to start another project in January 2015 and this looks fun!
ReplyDeleteI am going to try to keep up, never paper pieced before but I love the quilts I have seen!
ReplyDeleteI'm in. I've never paper pieced before, and I have a new baby at home, but I'm going to try to manage it. I LOVE Harry Potter and can't wait to read them to my daughter. This quilt will eventually be hers.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like fun! I'm in!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun! I am in.
ReplyDeleteI'm in! I've done eight blocks so far and could use the incentive! Beth @ Words & Stitches
ReplyDeleteI'm in on this. You didn't even need to twist my arm :-).
ReplyDeleteCannot wait to get this started!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt! I need to learn paper piecing so I can make it :)
ReplyDeleteI love the quilt and I'm excited about it, but signed up for a bunch of QALs already. I'm going to try.
ReplyDeleteHugs
I am in! I was going to put this project off for awhile but this gives me a reason to start it!
ReplyDeleteSo excited for this QAL!!! Thanks for all the patterns and support!
